The Hour Unrecognized

✦

I pour this dark wine upon the patient earth, and I lift my voice toward the high-seated gods who dwell beyond thunder, beyond cloud, beyond the circling eagle.

Hear me, deathless ones.

You did not shape me from grief without purpose. You did not place iron within my spirit merely so I might wander briefly beneath the sun like cattle crossing dusty fields. No. Somewhere the thread awaits. Somewhere stands the hour for which I was hammered upon the hidden anvil of fate.

I feel it moving toward me.

As sailors feel the storm before the first black wave rises. As hounds scent blood before the wounded stag emerges from cedar-shadow. As priests tremble when the temple grows suddenly still.

And because I feel it, joy itself has become heavy in my hands.

For I do not fear suffering. I do not fear surrender. I do not fear the lonely road walked beneath cold stars while lesser souls sleep warmly beside their fires.

I fear only blindness before destiny.

I fear that when the gods at last place before me the sacred burden I was born to carry, I will fail to know it.

That the great moment will not arrive crowned in bronze and lightning, but clothed in the garments of an ordinary day.

A doorway crossed. A word spoken. A hand extended. A sacrifice demanded quietly while Olympus watches in silence.

And I fear that hesitation will seize me like winter frost upon an olive tree.

That my spirit will grow small at the edge of the great deed. That confusion will cloud the mind the gods themselves spent long years sharpening through sorrow and longing and defeat.

Worst of all, I fear the gaze of the immortals.

That they will look down from their deathless halls expecting the fullness of the man they forged through suffering.

and behold instead a fearful creature clinging to comfort while the sacred hour passes by like a ship disappearing into sea-mist.

So now I walk watchfully beneath the turning heavens.

Not hungry for glory. Not thirsting for songs after death. But listening.

Always listening.

For the distant footstep of fate approaching across the stone floors of the world.

And if the appointed hour truly comes before me, if the gods at last unveil the labor for which they placed breath within my chest,

then let my soul stand upright before them.

Let me possess the wisdom to recognize the hour, the courage to embrace it without trembling, and the strength to deliver fully what was asked of me when first the Fates measured out my portion beneath the eternal stars.
